Abstract: The talk presents the tranScriptorium project, which aims to develop innovative, efficient and cost-effective solutions for the indexing, search and full transcription of historical handwritten document images, using modern, holistic Handwritten Text Recognition technology. The first preliminary results and challenges in HTR and Key Word Spotting will be discussed.
The concept of a comprehensive Transcription and Recognition Platform will be also introduced. The concept is based on the assumption that this is not a purely technical task but that it could best be done within a cooperative model where archives, humanities scholars, computer scientists and the general public are involved and provide specific contributions according to their individual mission and interest. A first prototype is currently developed in the tranScriptorium project and will be demonstrated during the talk.
