About the speaker: Derek Hoiem is a Professor in Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he has been faculty since January 2009. Derek received his PhD in Robotics from Carnegie Mellon University in 2007 and completed a Beckman Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2008. Derek also worked or consulted with several companies and is co-founder and Chief Science Officer of Reconstruct, which uses computer vision to show what is there versus what should be there for construction management and inspection. Derek’s research in computer vision and related areas has been recognized with an ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award honorable mention, CVPR best paper award, NSF CAREER award, Intel Early Career Faculty award, Sloan Fellowship, IEEE PAMI Young Researcher Award, and University Scholar Award.
Abstract: Despite amazing breakthroughs, AI is limited to an information retrieval and processing tool, making little parts of a job more efficient. What would it take to create AI that gets the whole job done? I will talk about three key elements that are needed, laying out the major challenges and a few ways that my group is exploring them.
