Abstract: My main research focus involves examining the role of shared rationales in the group ideation and deliberation activities, and exploring the use of text extraction and visualization methods to support members to articulate, share, and reuse the rationales. In this presentation, I will talk about several projects that are related to this focus, such as a small group ideation project that explored rationale sharing practices and the effects of rationale awareness – one’s awareness of the other members’ rationales – in the activities; a Mechanical Turk project that explored the effects of rationale awareness in online crowdsourcing ideation activities; and a Wikipedia Articles for Deletion (AfD) discussion project that explored the types of rationales in the online deliberation and used computational linguistic approaches to extract those AfD rationales that reflect the Wikipedia community’s knowledge about deletion process and policies for knowledge management and to extract those that facilitate the final decision-making processes about the discussed articles.
