Your Place or Mine? Learning from Long-Term Use of Video Communication - Naver Labs Europe

Investigations of the use of multimedia communication systems have typically concentrated on the largely mechanical aspects of pair-wise interaction with and through such technology, often based on relatively short-term studies. We are concerned with effects which arise over years rather than weeks or months, as patterns of behaviour develop and evolve. Based on experiences of these long-duration, semi-permanent multimedia connections, we look at patterns of adaptation from four perspectives — individual, interactional, communal, and societal — and discuss the implications for design and deployment, especially from these wider perspectives on use.
